Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is an increasingly common issue facing college and university students today. AD/HD symptoms may show up when trying to meet academic demands or in relationship problems with friends. Many times, students are academically successful when living in an environment with structure and support. Sometimes, when students begin college or start graduate work they struggle for the first time in their academic career. Despite their history of academic success, these individuals may have undiagnosed ADHD.

The hallmark symptoms of AD/HD include difficulty focusing attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. These symptoms must be present in two or more settings including school, home,and work and interfere significantly with daily functioning. Other signs of AD/HD include:

  • Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks
  • Being easily distracted or forgetful in daily activities
  • Making careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities
  • Lack of follow through in completing homework, chores, or responsibilities at work
  • Losing things necessary for tasks or activities
  • Fidgety or difficulty remaining still
  • Talking excessively or not seeming to listen when spoken to
  • Interrupting others or blurting out answers before questions have been completed

Students who struggle with signs and symptoms of ADHD are welcome to come to the UCC for an ADHD screening. In the event that additional testing and evaluation is needed, the UCC staff will provide students with community referrals for comprehensive ADHD testing and evaluation.
