Off-campus Referrals

There are times a student may want or need mental health services that are beyond the scope of the services provided at the UCC. In these instances, the UCC can provide an off-campus referral.

WHAT

At times, a student may want or need mental health services that are beyond the scope of the services provided at the University Counseling Center (UCC). Examples of this include circumstances in which more intensive or specialized treatment are indicated. If a student needs to see a counselor more than once a week or is looking for weekly, insight-oriented treatment for a longer duration for time, these services are also better suited for an off-campus referral.

WHO

Students may decide they would prefer to seek counseling services off campus or they may be referred off campus from a UCC Drop-In appointment if their counseling needs would be better met in the community.

Students who seek off-campus treatment are responsible for the costs associated with these services.

HOW

Thriving Campus is a regularly updated platform of off-campus providers in the local area. You can search for providers by topic area, types of insurance accepted, and therapist identities. The platform includes a “Help” feature that explains how insurance works and includes tips for finding a therapist.

During a Drop-In appointment, a counselor will discuss whether an off-campus referral would better address your needs and, if so, will provide referrals to possible treatment providers.

Students with University sponsored Aetna Student Health Insurance are required to have a referral from the UCC or University Health Services (UHS) for off-campus therapy. If you need this referral, please come in for a Drop-In appointment and we will assist you in finding off-campus services and provide the needed referral. If you would rather not meet with the UCC, you can contact UHS and meet with the Behavioral Health Clinical Case Manager to discuss a referral. Students interested in renewing an existing UCC Aetna referral for a new academic year, can call the UCC at 574-631-7336.
